Automating Erasure with Active@ KillDisk

This script is applicable for KillDisk versions 10 and below, the ones using Window Boot Disk based on WinPE 5.1 and earlier versions. If you use KillDisk version 11 and above (Windows Boot Disk uses WinPE version 10), some command line options may not work. If you use version 11 and higher, we recommend you using –ci (-ComputerID) command line option to include unique Computer ID to the certificate. Read help for details.

Introduction

This document will take you through the steps required to configure Active@ KillDisk so that you may start erasing drives automatically. The best way to automate Active@ KillDisk is prepare two files before creating a bootable CD or USB stick. Once you have created the two files below, you will be able to go on to creating the bootable CD or USB memory stick.

First file – KILLDISK.INI

On a standard workstation, install the Active@ KillDisk for Windows (or SUITE Edition). Launch the Active@ KillDisk program and go into settings.

Set the options you want to use in the General Tab. If you want to include Disk Serial Number and Technician Info into the certificate, send email notifications, or save reports to the removable storage - mark the related checkboxes.

Set the options you want to use for saving the PDF certificate.

It is recommended to save the certificate to the temporary WinPE X: volume (RAM Drive).

The certificate file can then be copied to another location once the erasure process is complete.

Specify the details of the Company and Technician who is completing the erasure procedure.

Should you want the certificate emailed, enter the details of the mail server and email account information. Configure the settings that you would like to use and click the Apply button.

Go to the installation folder, for example: C:Program FilesLSoft TechnologiesActive@ KillDisk folder and edit the KILLDISK.INI file.

Make sure your settings have been changed. You may want to make some minor adjustments. You should also remove all the lines after (and including) the [Geometry] section. This is not required and can interfere.

Also find and remove the line 'logComments='. This will be re-added in again when the script runs.

Make sure the KILLDISK.INI contains 'showLogo=true', otherwise the extra Technician info will not be displayed in the certificate.

Save the KILLDISK.INI file to a temp location.

Second File – KD-SCRIPT.CMD

This script is applicable for KillDisk versions 10 and below, the ones using Window Boot Disk based on WinPE 5.1 and earlier versions. Creating the Bootable Media

Launch the 'Active@ Boot Disk Creator' program.

In the User's Files section, add the KILLDISK.INI file.

In the Startup Scripts section, add your startup script (.cmd) file.

Ensure that you turn off the default application.

Since KillDisk is run in 'batch mode', launching the default program is not required.

Change the option in the Network tab so that the network interface can be initialized.

To secure the boot process so only authorized users can perform the erase procedure, specify a password. This is optional and not required, however, setting a password can prevent unauthorized use of the boot environment.

Notes

Active@ KillDisk is a portable application so it is possible to simply include the contents of the installation folder into a folder of your own WIM.

Append the registration keys to the SETTINGS.INI file as follows:

You may copy the contents of this entire folder and include it into your own WinPE WIM.

IMPORTANT!

If you stop KillDisk from completing the erasure, the automated process will be broken and will not complete properly. To truly test this procedure, modify the KD-SCRIPT.CMD, KillDisk command line options so that it only performs one pass of all zero’s ( -em=0 ). This erase method is quick. When it completes, it will confirm to you that the automation routine has completed successfully. You can always go back and change the command line parameter to use a more secure erase method.

7.3 A claimant may use a single claim form to start all claims which can be conveniently disposed of in the same proceedings.

Particulars of claim

7.4

(1) Particulars of claim must –

(a) be contained in or served with the claim form; or

(b) subject to paragraph (2) be served on the defendant by the claimant within 14 days after service of the claim form.

(2) Particulars of claim must be served on the defendant no later than the latest time for serving a claim form.

(Rule 7.5 sets out the latest time for serving a claim form)

(3) Where the claimant serves particulars of claim, then unless a copy of the particulars has already been filed, the claimant must, within 7 days of service on the defendant, file a copy of the particulars except where –

(a) paragraph 5.2(4) of Practice Direction 7C applies; or

(b) paragraph 6.4 of Practice Direction 7E applies.

Service of a claim form

7.5

(1) Where the claim form is served within the jurisdiction, the claimant must complete the step required by the following table in relation to the particular method of service chosen, before 12.00 midnight on the calendar day four months after the date of issue of the claim form.

7.6

(1) The claimant may apply for an order extending the period for compliance with rule 7.5.

(2) The general rule is that an application to extend the time for compliance with rule 7.5 must be made –

(a) within the period specified by rule 7.5; or

(b) where an order has been made under this rule, within the period for service specified by that order.

(3) If the claimant applies for an order to extend the time for compliance after the end of the period specified by rule 7.5 or by an order made under this rule, the court may make such an order only if –

(a) the court has failed to serve the claim form; or

(b) the claimant has taken all reasonable steps to comply with rule 7.5 but has been unable to do so; and

(c) in either case, the claimant has acted promptly in making the application.

(4) An application for an order extending the time for compliance with rule 7.5 –

(a) must be supported by evidence; and

(b) may be made without notice.

Application by defendant for service of claim form

7.7

(1) Where a claim form has been issued against a defendant, but has not yet been served on him, the defendant may serve a notice on the claimant requiring him to serve the claim form or discontinue the claim within a period specified in the notice.

(2) The period specified in a notice served under paragraph (1) must be at least 14 days after service of the notice.

(3) If the claimant fails to comply with the notice, the court may, on the application of the defendant –

(a) dismiss the claim; or

(b) make any other order it thinks just.

7.8

(1) When particulars of claim are served on a defendant, whether they are contained in the claim form, served with it or served subsequently, they must be accompanied by –

(a) paragraph (1) does not apply; and

7.9 A practice direction –
